HPC for Power Systems

Dr. Mike Mazzola

  1. Develop a simulation capability for large-scale utility transmission systems that is solved using parallel computing. Develop algorithms for wide-area control and optimization of a utility transmission system.
  2. Use CEM-Solver to partition and solve power system models. This allows for the efficient solution of dynamic state variables in a parallel computing environment.

How does this extend the limits of current practice?

Large scale utility transmission system state estimation is a computationally massive problem that is not solvable "faster than real time" with current methods. Application of massively parallel general-purpose cluster computing has been identified as a potential solution prevented by inadequate software development. This task will leverage original software previously developed in other government programs to advance the state of the art in parallel solutions to utility transmission system state estimation.
